9 Boxes was a pandemic project that got out of control, but it all really started 13 or so years ago. I was getting back into woodworking, something I'd done a lot of as a youth. My grandfather had a wood shop where I spent a lot of time and loved using all the tools and making stuff. As I was getting back into this, I got obsessed with forms I was finding in nature. I was taking a lot of pictures, like little crack patterns and as I saw all these forms, I was trying to transcribe the forms I was seeing into paintings. I wanted to use the woodworking and found that a laser cut was the perfect cut to bridge these two forms. It has been a fun project – five years of effort. 

It's such a different relation from film. I think by the time I'm done with a film, I get pretty aloof from it, you're kind of tired of it. It's been all encompassing and you don't want to see it for a while. With 9 Boxes, I find myself wandering around and it makes me happy.
